Brother of Newark’s Inspector General killed in shooting

A shooting Wednesday took the life of Al-Juan Wright, adopted brother of the city’s Inspector General, James Wright, and an acquaintance of Mayor Cory Booker.

“My deepest condolences are with the family of Al-Juan Mitchell Wright during this difficult time,” Booker said in a statement.

“I remember Al-Juan fondly from my time living at Brick Towers and over recent years,” said the mayor. “His loss is tragic, and the circumstances of his death make it all the more painful. Our prayers are with his family and all who knew and loved him.”

James Wright, who Booker appointed in 2007, did not comment.

Wright, 21, was shot on Irvine Turner Boulevard between West Kinney and Court Streets just after 7 p.m., said chief assistant prosecutor Thomas Fennelly.

He was taken to University Hospital but was pronounced dead about 40 minutes after being shot, authorities said.

Police did not release further information on the shooting.
